Private equity firms frequently claim deep sector expertise and operational specialization, but which managers actually dominate each industry when measured by active portfolio EV?
To provide transparent, actionable private equity market research, Gain analyzed private equity portfolio holdings globally, leveraging comprehensive private company financial data to rank the top investors across eight key market sectors based on enterprise value (EV) managed (excluding venture capital). We looked at the global PE investor base, from the largest European private equity firms to the investors dominating in the United States.
A Brief Look at the Global PE Sector Landscape
Collectively, the top 400 private equity investors globally manage an estimated $8.1 trillion in EV. Across this massive global portfolio, these are the sectors that carry the most weight:
Technology, Media & Telecom (TMT): TMT is the largest private equity sector globally, making up 24% of the Global 400 EV.
Services: The Services sector follows closely behind, accounting for 19% of the total EV.Consumer: The Consumer sector rounds out the top three, representing 11% of the EV managed by the top investors.
Additionally, the degree of specialization varies heavily by industry. TMT and Consumer stand out as the sectors with the highest specialist concentration, with sector specialists accounting for 42% and 25% of sector EV, respectively.

Key Industry Findings & Trends
1. Most Large Investors Are Generalists
While sector specialization remains the dominant narrative in private equity, the largest global megafunds still hold portfolios spanning multiple market segments. Deal sourcing across that breadth is what leads firms like Bain Capital, Ardian, CVC, 3i and Cinven to work with Gain on deal origination, diligence and market mapping.
Blackstone appears in all 8 sector rankings, securing the #1 position in two of them (Services and Infrastructure).
KKR appears in 7 sector rankings (every sector except Industrials).
Apollo Global Management, Bain Capital, and Partners Group each appear across 5 sector leaderboards.
2. TMT, Consumer, and Infrastructure Have the Most Specialist Investors
Unlike generalist investors, specialist firms use targeted deal-sourcing technology to focus heavily on specific industries.
TMT: Vista Equity Partners holds 97% of its managed EV in TMT, while Thoma Bravo holds 93%.
Consumer: Roark Capital allocates 84% of its managed EV to Consumer assets, followed by 3i Group at 79%.
Infrastructure: DigitalBridge has 78% concentration in Infrastructure, while IFM Investors holds 68%.
3. US Firms Dominate Most Sector Leaderboards - Except Infrastructure
Beyond sector specialisation, capital concentration also splits along geographic and institutional lines.
US Dominance: US-headquartered firms hold 65% of all leaderboard spots (62 of 96 total spots) and lead in 7 out of the 8 sectors.
Infrastructure Diversification: Infrastructure has the lowest US concentration, with only 4 of the top 12 positions held by US-based investors. The remaining positions are held by firms headquartered in Australia, Canada, Singapore, Switzerland, France, and the Middle East.
Sovereign Wealth: Sovereign wealth and public-capital investors including IFM Investors, Macquarie, GIC, CPP Investments, and PIF allocate significant capital to capital-intensive sectors, particularly Infrastructure and Energy & Materials.

All of the data used for our rankings and reports, derives from our platform. Many vendors offer software for private equity firms or tools that assist with deal origination, but Gain goes beyond this. Better data, human-led analysis, superior company and investor profiles are all optimised by our AI workflow automation and powerful integrations.
Across our reports, Gain ranks by EV, not deal count, to show who actually controls the most value in each sector, not just who's most active. Gain's data graph tracks 23,000+ PE firms and the deals, people, and companies behind them, replacing a patchwork of point solutions with one connected view dealmakers can act on.
